You can compare it with Bed & Breakfast. Chambres d’Hotes literally translated means guest rooms. To attract tourists at the countryside and to create an extra income for the local citizens the French are allowed to exploit a few guest rooms, whereby the guests very often can have a meal together with the host and hostess. The owner does not need any licenses. It is not allowed to have more then 5 rooms and to present a menu. Otherwise too much competition would arise with hotels and restaurants. This however gives the assurance that chambers d’Hôtes always are cosy and enjoyable and an excellent way to get acquainted with the French way of life and to learn and appreciate the local French kitchen.

Meanwhile an enormous variety in types of chambres d’Hôtes developed ranging from simple farms, horsefarms to exotic castles complete with luxury rooms, swimming pools, tennis courts, etc.
